Fish paralized?

Hi all

I have a platy that is lying sideways on the bottom of a breeder net. (I put the fish in a breeder net to keep it away from the other fish.)
She is trying to move but seems to be paralized on one side if that makes sense.
The fish was sick for a while, but anything that I have done to treat the fish did not work. The fish just got worse the last few days. I am at a loss of what to do.

Any suggestions?

I can't! I hate to see it suffer, but I just can't bring myself to kill it.




I think the fish has some sort of fungus infection, but I think it is too far sick to treat it.

My Gourami is ill, very ill....
Its coverered from head to foot in fungus and sores, it came on in 8hrs, over night. We think its the result of a Parasitic attack......
He is now in intensive care being treated with Methylene blue (for fungus and stuff) and Melafix, also with added aquarium salt.
I hope to god he recovers, but he is very, very ill....

Basically what im saying is, use your heart. If you really, truely dont think he's gonna live, do what needs to be done. On the other hand, i believe if he has ANY chance at all, then do all you can.

Do you have a QT tank you can treat him in?

I don't have a quaranteen tank. I do however, have a plastic tub that I have used to hand wash clothes once in the past that I can move the fish to.

I am sorry to hear about your fish. The symptoms your fish has sounds alot like what my fish has. It just seems to have gotten worse over night. The fish wants to move and is struggling to swim but can't. The fish has also a white coating on it and it covers one eye. I am thinking it is fungus.
Do you suggest that I move it to the tub?

I really feel bad for the fish. And the fish maybe can be saved.
I just can't bring myself to kill it. I don't have the ability to.
I am going to try to save it.

How do you feel the medication is helping your fish? Should I try the same medication?

Well, ask me how the meds are working in the morning..... he's only been in there 1/2 a day. Hes still alive tho so thats a start.

Methylene Blue is a General treatment. Its really only used these days to treat fungus on fish eggs..... but it has cleared up fungus on fish in the past, and has made alot of fish better IME.
It helps oxygenate the water, or rather helps the fish intake oxygen, helps fungus and acts as a kind of anti-septic.

Its effect is increased when you add aquarium salt. I am also adding Melafix too, to help the wounds heal.
Should you try it? well, i dunno, if he has the same as what mines got you'll wanna do something pretty quick.... he'll be covered in the morning !

I really dont know what else to suggest. I wouldnt put him in a tub. The tank will need to be filtered well, clean, well oxygenated and good quality water.... if you can acheive this in a tub i would be surprised.

Have you any anti-fungus treatment. This will help, although fungus is usually a result of something else.... maybe a parasite of some kind......

Damn it, im all choked up..... he was beautiful......

Whatever you decide to do, do it quick..... dont want to panic you, my heads all messed up at the mo....
I would say setup a quarantine tank/tub to the best you can.... and treat accordingly....

Sorry to hear about your fishes.
I had an elephant nose which one day was shedding it's mucas due to poor water quality as my little one had turned all my electricity to the tank off and Ammonia and NitrItes spiked.
He seemed to be on the mend but in the space of an afternoon he all of a sudden took a turn for the worse.
I treated him for a couple of days with melafix etc but he continued to get worse and worse, it got to the point that I couldn't see him suffer any longer and I eventually made the very hard decission to put it out of it's misery.
What I am trying to say is, if you can treat your fish then great, go for it. Treat it with what you can, I would say put it in the tub you have. If it doesn't seem to be getting any better and seems to be suffering then do it a favour and put it out of it's misery, it is much easier to say than to do I know.
I miss my elephant nose, he was one of my favourite fish which I suppose made the decision harder.

Try and treat him as best as you can but if you fell it is getting to bad and not improving you should have to bring yourself to killing it. See http/fish.orbust.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8031 - The one I would do is an anaesthetic as it isnt like you are killing the fish like Decapitation.

Fawke: I am very sorry to hear about your fish.

I just wanted to give a quick update about my fish.

I decided to leave the fish in the breeder net in the tank. I have a 10 gallon with only one other fish besides the sick one. Unfortunately the plastic tub idea wouldn't of worked out.

The fish is still lying on it's side trying to move. The fish has fungus. The side the fish is lying on is covered in way much more amount of fungus, (mostly my the mouth, on the fin and even over the eye than the other side is. )
Today, I moved it to the fish net temporarily. This way, the net kind of folds in so the fish can stay more straight. The fish hasn't eaten in days so I decided to try to feed it a few flakes by putting a flake near its mouth with my finger.
The fish ate a few flakes which I was suprised.

I also treated the tank with fungus clear yesterday. On the box, it says that besides fungus, it treats a few other problems like eye cloud. Not sure if the fungus covered over the eye is considered eye cloud.

I have to wait about 4 days before I can treat the tank again. I honestly don't know if this is helping or not. The fish seems very much alive, except for the fact that it is lying on it's side, unable to swim and covered in fungus. I don't want to see it suffer, but yet I can't bring myself to kill it especially since there is a possibility for the fish to recover.
I will continue to treat the water and continue to try to feed it. But, if the fish doesn't get the ability to swim, I guess I will have no choice of what to do.
