Fish of the week

Hawkfish

Come share your photos and experience of

these lovely fish

Beautiful, amazing fish with such personalities.

I have an aggressive six line, and my caribbean (also know as Red Spotted) Hawkfish has been the only small fish to be successfully added to the tank. I got him when he was teeny, and now he is around an inch in length.

His personality is amazing, he hops about, following you around the tank as you're looking around at it. Definitely an attention hog, not a shy fish.

I have never had any type of problem with him killing or attacking any invertebrates (shrimp, snails, crabs or hermits); rather it's the cleaner shrimp who attacks him

I love him, he is adorable, no swim bladder so hops and jumps all over the tank

I would like to add that mine has been caught attacking fish multiple times now!!! Caught attacking and killing a male/female pair of gold head sleepers and he also attacked my fairy wrasse despite the fairy being 4+ inches long! After about a week he got over the wrasse. He is also suspected of killing my toby. Still doesn't bother shrimp or hermits... Beware!

I have heard horror stories with Falcos as well killing all sorts not a fish I would recomend shame really as they are stunning

I have Longnose pair, Falco and a Flame Hawkfish (seperate tanks) and they all have at any thing remotely resembling a crustacean. The shrimp would last as long as it would take to eat it. They are the most facinating pet fish. Very pet like. Mine are always in my business.

I used to have a Falco's hawkfish in my old 90 Gal. before I moved, he ate all of my hermits, snails that fell over and were vulnerable, but he didn't ever mess with my coral banded shrimp.
He also wasn't very nice to fish around the same size as him. BUT, like everyone else said they are AWESOME fish, very personable and interesting.

I know its a little off topic, but if any of you remember the Red Fin Waspfish I got a few months ago, he is pretty much a 100% peaceful hawkfish/lionfish mix.
He usually swims slowly like a lionfish, but when I'm feeding he swims as fast as a Hawk.
He has never messed with anything in my tank, and just kinda chills all day in his spot. (which he changes every couple of days)

The only thing I don't like about him is that there is almost NO information on them.
I have found only two sources, one saying the venom is exactly like a lionfishes while the other states that it is one of the most venomous fish in the trade other than stonefish.
So I don't know what to think about his venom, but I sure as hell know where he is at all times my hand is in the tank, HAHA

How about starting a thread on the fellow - that way if anyone is searching for info it will pop up for them :good: I would also love to see some photos

I thought about doing one of these for a while. I thought it is very pretty and cute and funny looking fish that have ... until I read all the comments on this site. Thanks to everyone who helped me said to stay away from an apparently quite disastrous!

I love hawks, have had a scarlet almost from the start, yeah, I do have to keep large inverts, but in my tank thats not a problem - I love my little fellow
