You can dilute your tap water with reverse osmosis water.

Did we get the actual number? It may not be needed to soften it

this is what they gave me, they said to put it in my filter

Softening pillows use sodium chloride as an exchange resin to take out calcium and mag cations, this is basically the same method used in a water softener in ones shower water. Sodium chloride us basically table salt which is harmful to fresh water fish. Id avoid any product using sodium chloride.
Like was said the safest way to lower GH in a fish tank is by mixing RO or distilled water both of which dont use sodium chloride to filter out calcium/mag.
