such a bummer. i came home from work today and went to check on my betta that i keep in a small tank in the kitchen. i couldn't find him... after about few minutes of searching ive given up. i think he jumped out. i knew not having a tank lid was a risk and now im kickin myself. i can't find him anywhere though, not on the floor, not behind the tank. the only answer i can come up with is maybe my cat or dog found him on the floor and ate him. possible? this is a real downer though, the family was growing a little attachment to him. he was about a year old. :rip: . I saw a nice paradise fish at the pet store the other day. if they still have it then i guess i'll replace the betta with the paradise (i'll have a lid this time). lol a couple years ago, i never wouldve thought i'd get attached to a fish, but there really was some sentimental value there.

This is entirely possible. I've always had a small terrier or three around, and while I do try to keep tanks securely covered there is the occasional fish that wants to experiment with evolving to living on land.

I've caught dogs munching on one, as they often follow me in there to check for stray flakes on the floor. A stray fish is an added bonus, ID can be difficult after being dried on the floor and chewed a few times.

Sorry for your loss, these things happen to the best of us. I often multitask, and have tanks open for an hour or two while doing maintenance, so I know how these things happen in my setup.

thanks for the words. im pretty sure the dog got to it. its the only explanation that makes sense to me. i guess i should replace the betta pretty soon so the good bacteria in the filter doesnt die off. the bettas bubble nest is still there though. ah, so sad. oh well, thats life.

sorry to hear that
to keep the bacs alive, just add agood pinch of fishfood every few days. when its gone, add some more. then a nice clean and waterchange before adding the new fish.
ive used this method reliably in the past. recently in fact. and look for a nice replacement and dont worry about the filter.
cheers

I have a jack russell terrier and 3 cats. I have to keep my bedroom door shut here at my parents house or my bettas would be eaten (by one of the cats, not necessarily the dog) I've caught my calico cat sitting on the lid of my 5.5 gallon betta tank one too many times. She nearly fell in on one occasion and another time she jumped off the tank and onto my DVD player which swung off my dresser and smacked a golf ball size hole in my wall.

Needless to say...I've found you have to work around owning four-legged creatures and aquatic ones. It can be a pain, but can't blame a cat for being a cat.

.
sorry but that was pretty funny

anyway i have yet to expierience the suicide but one time my rainbow decided to get back at me for measuring it and it flew out and hit my face and fell back in, im happy it did that as my dog was right under me, couldnt have imagined what might have happened

omg me too. I had a tetra go missing when on vacation. I found one of these same tetras dry behide the tank so I know they like to jump. I came back from vacation to no sign of this tetra. maybe another fish eat it but I don't think so I think my dog got it.

Yes this can happen sorry .

Sorry to hear this, big hugs xx

I don't need to worry about bettas jumping out, I have to worry about my son dumping batteries, crayons, sky remote control and anything else he can find, in the tank! Although, I am pretty good at taking a sky remote apart now
