If the biological filter is not established yet, you can add Prime every 48 hours to keep the ammonia and nitrites de-toxified while the beneficial bacteria get established to break down the ammonia. You will still detect the ammonia and nitrites even though Prime has de-toxified them for 48 hours.

I have duckweed in my 20-gallon tank that does a great job reducing these toxins too.

What kind of filter do you have? I found sponge filters take awhile to get biologically established. I recommend using an HOB filter like Aquaclear 20 for a 10 gallon.

Ah ok that makes sense.

Just do what you can, these things happen and you can't reverse the situation. Ebay and etsy are good for plants, I'd recommend getting something like elodea densa and water lettuce to start as they don't need planting, but the water changes are the main thing you need to do. At each water change add Prime, even if you're changing water twice a day. It will slowly start to settle down, but it may take a good few weeks.
Ok went to my LFS again today they said they dont stock floating plants till spring as they die in winter transport here in Canada

Hmmm I can't speak for that as we don't get anything like the kind of temperatures where I live! You could try a small online purchase and see how the plants do?

I have a marina S20 filter and it is a 10 gallon tank (you can look it up) the filter is for a 20 gallon and has a little sponge on the intake
