They're very hard. lol. Females tend to be a little deeper and plumper but a tad smaller than the males. Males also usually have very elongated fin extensions than females who can have extensions, but most of the time not quite as ellaborate.

Is it best to do the usual get a juvenile pair of 6 and let them pair off thing?

Usually yes, but like i said, conspecific aggression can be bad so it needs to be a lengthy tank and you should have a back up plan if some start getting bullied.

I was thinking about something different, purely because the take is quite large and it'd be nice to add a few more top-middle dwellers. Any suggestions? I'm not worried about breeding, just that they're all happy and not overcrowded. Scuse the ignorance, never kept cichlids before (apart from my two oscars, which don't share with anything), that's why I'm here :)

On another note, I noticed that one of my Rainbows (different tank) has developed a white eye, looks like fungal cataract. Any recommended treatments? My water is good, they're fed on a mixture of algae rich food, mosquito larve, occasional vegetables and a small amount of flake food. I've had them for about 3 years, this is the first I've seen of it. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Any chance it could've caught its eye on some decor, or been pecked by another fish?

Is 87 gallons even big enough for 2 oscars :S
Whats the dimensions?

It's possible, though I've never seen any of them particularly stressed or aggressive toward one another. There're plenty of things he could've hit it on If it is physical, I guess there's not much I can do.

Plenty of water changes will help if it has caught its eye on something. Another fish may have harmed it also, again, if it is something that CAN get better then water changes will work.

With regards to your stocking for the tank with the Thorichthys Aureus in, what's the current stock list? That would help with any suggestions.

Thanks. I'll do that for the rainbows.

The Thorichthys Aureus is with 3 adult Pictus Catfish about 4 inches each and a pleco. The tank is roughly 140cm x 48cm x 76cm, so it'll be closer to 500 Litres.

Something like a group of Bleeding Heart Tetra's would be good. Small fish like Neon Tetra's, Cardinal Tetra's, Glowlight Tetra's etc would become food for the Pictus at night time.

Arulius, Spanner, Tiger and Black Ruby Barbs would be ideal if you could find larger sized ones. Fiesty enough to stick up for themselves should they need to, and if kept in a large shoal which you have the room for, shouldn't post any threats of nipping you other fish.

Adult Thorichthys make for great centre piece fish, and if the Pims are active in the day time then you will have a great tank when fully stocked.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll pop over to the shop and see what they have. The Pims are active in the day and the Thorichthys is very inquisitive. I think I'll add a couple of shoals over the next few months and plant up a bit more.

Really appreciate your help.

6 lovely Tiger Barbs added. Looks brill already, thanks for all of your help.

I would up it to 10 in a week just to ensure the squabling stays amongst themselves. Your aureus has some lovely fins, would hate to see them with holes in.

Will do, I've got my eye on another six, just always been taught to add gradually. Will pick them up this weekend.

Got me another 6, looks great and everyone's getting on so far, appreciate your help.

Now to start on my empty, soon to be planted tank....
