Let's try a cryptic clue then...
 
This fish might be in a state to volunteer as an orange fruit bolt. (Jeezo, that sounded much better in my head)

BOLT, and it's cryptic, so Orange is not in the name of this fish.
 
Would the volunteer part make sense outside the UK? I have always used volunteer as a pointer towards "ta", which is a UK-only reference.

It's native to USA and lives in rivers!
 
"State to Volunteer" is a clue to where in the USA and "Orange-Fruit Bolt" is a clue to it's name!

In this case it's a direct clue to where it can be found in the USA.
