I saw this fish in one of my local shops today, and I cannot figure out what it is. I'll try and give the best description and hopefully someone can clue me in.
It looked to me like a large tetra, the size of it was similar to a full grown silver dollar, but the shape was more tri-angular. Mostly white/silver in color but the top edge of the fish was a bright yellow. The fish seemed to be a bit timid in the tank it was in, looked to me like it should be a shoaling fish, but was all alone with a dempsy. I'm really curious now, I wish I had my cell phone with me for a pic. can anyone help me figure out what it was.

The only triangular fish I can think of that's anywhere near the size of a silver dollar, is an angel fish.

But they're not tetras, and I'm very tired and usually wrong.

Not an angel, and not truly triangular, but close. Ehhhh, I wish I had my other cell phone.

Pop into your local library and borrow (or better still buy froma book store) the Baensch Aquarium Atlas, its the most comprehensive book for any fish keeper, I swear by it. I've taken a look in mine, and think what you may have see is:

Acnodon normani, Metynnis lippincottianus, Myleus rubripinnis rubripinnis or a Mylossoma duriventre (Silver Mylossoma).

Hope that helps!

a Festivum Mesonauta festivus?

Ah good point, I didn't think of Brackish fish...

Theres a lovely shoal of Mono's at my favourite fish store (Pughs Pets - Maidenhead Aquatics Chain), they are in with a full marine set-up (its massive 10ftx10ftx10ft).
