Cichlid my best guess would be Midas but becuase so many cichlids are cross bred it can be very hard to be certain which species it is or which cross without speaking directly to the breeder.

It's not a bad guess.

Any small fish like the one in the first picture will probably become snacks.

snakes yes was thinking that

wasnt dissing the midas option ,just shocked as hadnt thought of that

it was sold to my son as a jack dempsey !

I'd have guessed Jack Dempsey myself, but as has been said, there are so many out there that have interbred that ID's can be difficult if you don't know the breeder.

For me the difference was the banding markings.

What other fish are in the tank? Are they likely to be on the Cichlid's menu?

I have a 6 foot tank full of Live bearers, And I threw in 2 small ( about the size of a fully grown Platy ) Firemouth Cichlid's as fry  population control.  And they do a great job.  I only say this because most Cichlid's will eat it if it fits in its mouth type of thing, Things like shrimp and fry make tasty snacks.

With the better picture it certainly does show more of the irridescent spotting common to Jack Dempsy's, but it still doesnt stop it being a cross with another type of cichlid. Pure or crossed either way watch out for its aggressive tendancies.
I have seen mature male Jack Dempsy's and they are a stunning fish, just a shame they like destroying every plant in their tank.

I think its a jack dempsey. its shape, neon spots and a tail marking, totally relate to what i think, is a female dempsy

could it be JD and texas , as to me the slop of the face is like texas head

a fish expert from usa says parrot/texas gee
