Looks pretty silly to me, but I'm an engineer.
It's "art" -- lots of form, almost zero function.
And, he does state in his FAQ section that he uses magnetic algae scrapers to clean the algae. I'd have to see it to believe it, though, with all those acrylic junctions.
Plus, even as "art", it looks pretty bad. To me, anyway.
