So I finally have my tank cycled and i think i am ready for fish. I go to the pet store and pick out 4 guppies and bring them home. They seem to be doing well and I have to leave for the red sox game. When I come home from the game I go to check on them and find about 17 babies in the tank and the mother dead from birth i am guessing. It has been almost a week and the babies and other adults are doing fine. I haven't separeted them and the babies seem to be holding their own and pretty smart to eat and hide. I know this is too many fish for my 10gal tank once they get bigger. Do I raise them and then give them away? is their anything special I should be doing for them?? They are very cute and already getting a little bigger. Any help greatly apprechiated!

If you wanted all of them to survive then you could put them in a net or in a separate tank but If your not bothered about all of them suriviving you could leave them with the adults and raise the suvirors. Sounds Like your guppy babies are doing well though. You could give them away for free or sell them on ebay or on here for cheap, Its your choice. But I would give them for free, as guppys have a lot of babies so your wouldnt be missing out on anything like big profit. I'd Just feed them mashed up flakes it should be fine.
Good Luck on them and can you post pics if you get the chance :D

also how long till these babies start having babies?!? and how do i tell boys from girls when it comes time to keep them, i think once these are older i would only want females, so that the breeding stops.

Well TTF have a whole section on Livebearers and guppys belong to group of fish. Im not sure when the maturity age is but I do know that these fish can have fry every 28 days! Also, I believe males are sometimes much more colourful than the females but this isnt always the case, Im not really a guppy expert. So, you'll have to ask someone else. :)
Good Luck!
