hey i recently ie this mrning moved the tank decor round a bit and now 3 or 4 neons seem to have lost alot of there colour any ideas, whats up and what i can do??

When you say you "moved the tank decor around"...
I take it that means you stuck your hands in the tank?

Did you wash your hands and rinse them really well first?
Did you have anything on your hands that you can think of?

Just thoughts....

not that i can think of no, but a good thought non the less, and its only a few of them as well, also did a partial water cahnge could the change in temp have done it

Are you saying the Neons had good color before you moved the decorations ??

Too much light can cause color fading. Perhaps the distribution of shade has changed ?? ... maybe those fish affected are being put out of the shade by other fish ??

The only other ideas I know of are general water quality .. pH ... food quality ... medicines added to the water ?? ...

Good Day ...

I did a large water change and moved some of the fake plants around and added new ones in my 29 gallon and 3 of my older neon tetras looked like they had neon tetra disease since they were so pale. The other I purchased the week before that looked perfectly fine though. I freaked out and thought I was going to lose them but I turned the lights out and hoped they would be better in the morning. The next day I checked on them and they were bright as ever! I think I just stressed them out by moving everything around.

Fish can lose coloration due to stress so maybe you just spooked them.

Did you dechlorinate your water?

And yep, I agree with Rach - if your big ol' hands (to them they look monstrous) being in the tank AND having everything moved around could have stressed them.

Let us know how they're doing in the morning.

Hehe yea...Just imagine if you were sitting in your room and some huge giant hand came in and moved everything around and you couldn't escape. I would probably turn really pale. :p

Yea, report back in the morning. I hope the fish do okay.

they all seem fine again now, after the lights went out etc, so yeah i gues they had just got spooked they seem happy as larry now, espcailly afetr they got extra brine shrimp as a treat

I would have guessed stress, especially since you may well have moved some of their hiding places.

You may also notice them "dampen" their colouring after lights out, but become more vibrant once the lights come back on. It is a defence mechanism, if you shone like a light bulb, you'd want to be able to disguise your position occasionally :)

yeah i think that was probably it, as i moved the driftwood and 2/3 of the plants al seem happy again now.

Thanx all
