I have a five foot tank that I used to keep a pair of Oscars in, they where about 3 years old 9" Long when I got them from my lfs about 6 years ago.

I would like to keep some thing differant this time but I'm not sure what to keep. :dunno:

Over the years I have kept most cichlids in my other tanks ( 4x2x1, 3x1.5x1) I'v also breed a lot of the dwarf cichlids in my breeding tanks ( 2x 2.5x1x1, 2x 2x1x1)

I'm looking for some thing other than cichlids but don't know what, can any one help, I would consider anything other than cichlids as I have a breeding pair of Apistogramma hongsloi, Apistogramma iniridae, Aequidens sapayensis and Aequidens pulcher at the monent.

OK... I'm no good with tank dimensions so whats the gallonage? And to make some people happy, the surface area.

Bichirs are always nice and different. Also i think a couple gars would be nice in there. Both species are different and much more interesting than cichlids IMO

That should be 110 US gallons.

You could do alot in that tank. Are you thinking a community tank, or a species tank?

You could have 4 or 5 angels, a school of rosey barbs, some loaches and an army of corys, and still have tons of room to play with. Maybe some gouramies. Or you could do a discus tank.

Tell us what fish you like the looks of, and we will be able to tell you what they are compatable with and what fish you can't use.

I think you should do something interesting with the tank - forget the common things like Angels, barbs etc...

Go for some interesting catfish, or as Fishy411 said, birchirs are nice..
Maybe you could look into other large cichlids, or something different... large puffers? or other oddballs - Knife Fish or something?

Just dont waste such a nice large tank!

100gl uk as i'm from england, I like the look of the Metynnis hypsauchen and the Distichodus affinis or Leporinus arcus or the Osphronemus goramy what would go with these fish.

The silver dollar (M. hysauchen) get along with most fish that won't attack them, there a nice large shoaling fish, so would look best in about a group of 5.

distichodus can be quite boistrous (IIRC) so depending on other fish you may want to cut this out.

not sure on the arcus, but the gorumai is out the question as they get to big for a 5ft.

Osphronemus get to a respectable 18-24" !!! so i would not go for them..

Silver Dollars are nice but remember not to put them in planted tanks as they do tend to munch on plants quite readily...

Distichodus are fairly aggressive sometimes, and some species can get as big as 2ft although most of the species you see in the home aquarium trade max out at 8" (affinis). So just make sure to put them with larger or more boisterous fish (oddballs/catfish/cichlids). Oh and Distichodus Affinis are also plant eaters - not sure about the others though.

I can see why you'd like a giant gourmai :) So would I. 100g.... As said before, I'd go for some larger cichlids/oddballs.
