Hey all!

Went to a pet store around here to find a male platy to mate with my female sunburst. I looked at the platy tank and all I could find is females. I then saw a bit large platy that looked like it was a male (its anal fin was pointed), so I asked the "expert" there and he said without a doubt that was a male. WELL!!! I'm about to have platy fry as the male has boxed off and the fin that was pointed is now a full fin. Maybe I need to see more males...

Here she is, Think she'll pop soon lol?:

Odds on that you will have a Male in the brood she will drop, collect them grow them sell the excess to the LFS.

She is looking very square, so you should have fry in a day or two.

In your dreams!! Give, maybe.

And I agree with Flutter about timescales.

Some of my platies have a dark edge on their fins that when not fully extended and you look really quickly look somewhat male. But with a good solid look it is easy to see it is coloring and not a gonopodium. LOL I think that fish person needs to take more time before announcing gender.

Well you've probably got quite a few males for the price of one! :p

Thank the 'expert' for that ahahh, I wouldn't trust him again though. This forum is great for asking questions before you buy and what not :)

Lucky for me she was only 99 cents. If most of them survive i could have a fish for like 2 cents a pop haha

Oh far, far less than that. They're 2 cents a pop now, then 0.5 cents a pop, then 0.05 cents a pop........

Platies are like pringles, once the pop, you can't make them stop.

Does anyone else see what I'm seeing here?  Does she look like she might be having some issues with a prolapse of some kind?  Hopefully not!  Keep a close eye on her and if others start bothering her.. separate her.

I had that thought, but can't tell in the picture. Looked to me like the pink was on the inside in the top picture with clear above it. If that is the case, then the second picture is deceiving as the "clear bit" didn't show up in the picture.

When I looked at it; it looked like it has a fry stuck right there. I didn't really think there would be that big of an alarm

That's why I gave up on Live-bearers, they never stop and then I found the guppies got all deformed from so many births.

Good luck with yours redskygrave, platys I found were usually hardier.

I've had my female guppies long enough for them to run out of juice. LOL Took them 6 batches. The other females are all virgins.

My platy is still going strong though... I do think the batches are shrinking as only 3 survived being eaten last time and 3 survived getting eaten in the last week.
