Hello,

I don’t know what to say, about 4-6 days ago I had a pajama cardinal die with breathing very heavy and swimming about upside down, trying to swim right but hitting things. I put it in a net and there it died

Then about 2-3 days later same thing with a blue tang

today same again with Cortez angel BUT I have seen on the angel before anything died that its colour is changing ALOT with grey spots all over it and getting more everyday, [I thought this was it changing colour at 1st] but now I can see that something is wrong in my tank.

Tested
Nitrite: 0.1-0.3 but left it out all night and now thats 0.3-0.8
Ph: 8 ish
Ammonia: 0 but left it out all night and its now something like 3.7-6.1

But if my ammonia is right at 3.7-6.1 then i know what to do and everything but that is me leaving it out all night as i just went to bed.

I am going today with the Cortez angel to my lfs to see if they know anything

Thanks for all your help i know it would be better with a picture but i only have a iphone and dont know how to get my pictures from it on the computer :( if i find out i will upload them.

Many Thanks Eigdoog :good:

Edit:
I am going to be going now to the lfs but if anyone can help please do, i also would like to add i make my own RO water and put it in a barrel that has had like fruit init, i dont think that matters but i just dont know:( sure wish ski was around :p

Got picture from using my mums phone [Thanks mum]

I know you cant really see it that well but i think you can get the idea.

Not sure if this'll help at all but sounds a bit like Brooklynella. The infections are initially confined to the gills but eventually will spread causing tissue irritation and skin slough producing ulcers.
Fish become lethargic and secrete excess mucus. Death can occur within twelve hours from toxins released by the protozoa. First indicators can include heavy breathing, cloudy eyes, excessive mucus and Ich like lesions.
Are you sure it's not Ich? did the cardinal /tang have any visible spots?
Also I'm fairly sure that you're NOT supposed to read from tests that have been lying around. So i wouldn't count on those readings.

i could not see anything on the cardinal only fins were like it had be attacked, the tang i did see a like mark on it and next thing i know hes gone, as for the angel he has had these marked for about a week now maybe a week and a half but i just looked and he is aready gone now.

how do you rid of brooklynella?

all the other fish look fine for now [clarkii clowns *2 , blue damels *2 , blue spotted watchman goby , rabbit fish] all of those dont have any signs of ich on them. i did wonder if they kept getting stung by something? but i just dont know.

Thanks for your help

It's probably not then... if it was it would've spread like wildfire by now. =/
I'm not really sure what else it could be. Hope you find out soon.
What did you LFS say?

I don't know what it is but it's probably not brooklynella, because the clowns would probably have gotten it first. The only thing i can think of it to make sure you have a powerhead pointed towards the top for surface agitation. :/

I would like to know exactly what the water conditions are, ie: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, PH, temperature & salinity.

Angels and tangs are more sensitive to disease organisms than damsels, clowns & gobies. Rabbitfish can be hard to keep when first obtained but are generally hardy after they have been in the tank for a while. Cardinalfish are normally tough.
The symptoms you describe, difficulty swimming & heavy breathing, can be brought about by bad water but are more commonly associated with a disease of some sort. Brooklynella is a possibility and will affect weak fish or new fish before it affects healthy stock that has been in the tank for a while. It is usually brought about by poor tank conditions and over crowding. But as mentioned it tends to kill quickly so is unlikely to be the cause.
Whitespot or Oodinium could be present in the tank but should be seen on the fish. It also kills quickly. There are a number of other parasites & protozoans that affect marine fish but they usually occur in dirty overcrowded tanks.

How long has the tank been set up for?
When was the last time you did a water change?
How much water do you normally change and how often?
Do you aerate/ mix the R/O water and marine salt for a day before you use it?
Do you clean the substrate and if so how often?
When was the filter last cleaned and did it get washed out under tap water?
How big is the tank?

I would do a couple of big water changes (50-75%) using water that has been made up for at least 24 hours before it is used. I would clean the filter and increase surface turbulence/ aeration. Then monitor the fish for any signs of disease and unusual behaviour.

well i went with a water test today at my lfs and i got this:
KH : 5
Ph : 7.6
Ammonium : 0.1
Nitrite : 0.025

They are what they tested and said that it could be stress as my Ph keeps going up and down same wth my sait levels and do more water changes 10-25%.

How long has the tank been set up for? 6-9 months?
When was the last time you did a water change? week ago ish i do them every 2 weeks ish
How much water do you normally change and how often? 16-32 liters
Do you aerate/ mix the R/O water and marine salt for a day before you use it? dont mix for a day got RO in a barrel get it out and add
Do you clean the substrate and if so how often? substrate? sorry im just thick
When was the filter last cleaned and did it get washed out under tap water? month ago and in there water
How big is the tank? 24 inch * 24 inch * 18 inch [imp gallon 37, US gallons 45, liters 170]

As for the rabbit fish and goby i got them saturday i think [last week] as you said the thing about rabbit fish.

hope this helps thanks eigdoog
