Reaaranging my fish tanks for couple of new tanks and would like to make my 55 Gallon into a Cihilid tank. Currently I decieded I would like to get an Electric Blue Johanni and a Cobalt Blue Zebra.

Two questions. What is perhaps a red Cihilid which would go well with these two?

Also, do you think 2 Balas of about 6 inches each would works with these?

Thanks in advance!

There isent really any Red Mbunas....alot of people keep Jewel Cichlids as their 'red' in Mbuna tanks...they tend to get on very well with them according to a few hundred Mbuna keepers on a Malawi forum i use.

Of course there is always a risk tho.

The closest to red you'll get with mbuna is Metriaclima estherae, males are a yellowy-orange, while females are a dark orange-red.

Balas wouldn't work for a couple of reasons, first they should be kept in groups and would need a much larger tank and second the mbuna would likely kill them.

I'm not sure how much research you've done on mbuna so far, but I highly recommend reading the following links:

There is the red peacock colour morph. Usually goes by a variety of names such as Rubinscens, Fire fish, Dragons Blood etc etc etc. Some are very nice looking fish, but plenty of bad examples. Also its not a natural colour morph but a tank bred one.
