Posted in the wrong section earlier, sorry im new :/

But anyways, i recently bought a red peacock cichlid, and was wondering what would be some good tankmates for him? I currently have him in a 45 gallon tank hexagon tank so it is taller than wide, and his current mates are 2 hybrid parrots, an emerald cory, and a pleco. I would like to put some electric blue/yellow cichlids (Labidochromis caeruleus)in with them, and was wondering what else would be suitable? Recently had to remove 2 jewels because they were beating on him ( should have seen that one coming).
Thanks in advance

This would probably do better in the old world section, a mod might move it but if it gets a while I would consider making a post in that section.

If the "red peacock" is some sort of Aulonocara sp. cichlid, then these mix reasonably well with Labidochromis provided there are sufficient hiding places for both as well as lots of open water for the Aulonocara. I have seen people mix both with hybrid blood parrots, but I'm not a fan of these hybrid cichlids so wouldn't personally recommend it. Putting aside aesthetics, one problem with hybrids is its difficult to predict behaviour. Some specimens hold their own with the milder Malawian cichlids, but others do not. All three will of course thrive in hard, basic water conditions.

Your main problem will be the size of your tank; 45 gallons isn't much space to work with, and the tall shape of hexagon tanks means that you have less flexibility when it comes to decorating the tank with rocks. These tall tanks invariably work best where relatively small species are being kept. The small gregarious lamprologines like Lamprologus brichardi for example work really well.

The plec will be fine with whichever cichlid, but the poor Corydoras has no business being in this tank at all.

Cheers, Neale

Well the 2 hybrids currently own the tank, and even did so with the two jewels so im not worried at all about them. Why wouldnt my catfish be ok? He seems happy and healthy right now and has been for the past month or so. Thanks for all the help though :good:

Oh and it is much more than just a clever name ;)
