Fish Attacking Other Fish - Eaten Tail

Hey guys,

serius problem here,ive had these two fish (same unknown species) in my tank for over a month now and they all seem to get on fine until the past few days,one keeps atacking the other and has nibbled at the others tail.

i have seperated them,but what can i do to stop it?i dont have another tank,ive had to use a plastic container to part them as ihave no other alternative.

he doesnt atack any of the other fish,im sorry but i cant name the fish because i dont know them.

the victim,he can still swim but that tail looks nasty.

i feed them reguarly,and they all eat the food so i dont know whats happening.

think they are gouramis, is it possible you have two males so they are fighting?

Hi whats the tank size?
They are the gold form of the three-spot Gourami which can get quite territorial when they mature,
My guess is there isn't enough room for them both to build a territory and so the dominant one is trying to chase the other one out even though it has nowhere to go

You cant keep 2 male gouramis together unless you have a big enough tank! you cant even keep one male gourami with one female or the same thing happens! You will need to get rid of one - ask the fish shop where you bought them to take one back.

This is why it is so important to do some research before you buy fish - if you did this you wouldnt have this problem and your fish would not be suffering unecessarily. If you have the internet there is no excuse!

The offender looks female.. The dorsal fin is short and rounded. I can't see the other fish's dorsal fin. But I recommend keep one gourami. You can treat with melafix to help repair fins.

hi guys thanks for replying,

my tank size is 2 foot,i have 7 other types of fish in there and they all get along fine,

what i know is i have 2 algae eaters

and 2 other smaller white algae eaters (there so small) no pics though,

i have 2 of these brigh orange ones on photo

and ihave a massive but beautifull Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami,nobody messes with him lol.

Phage,you reccomend keeping one gourami,what should i do with the other,see he/she can still swim with the half eaten tale but having trouble.

your right in saying i should have done some research into what fish can go together though,the guy at the shop said they would be fine but obviusly he was lying just for whopping sale of £2.50 a fish

We all make this mistake - never ever rely on what the local fish shop tell you unless you know they are good and reliable! Some will tell you anything for a sale!

Dont know what the algae eater is but the orange fish is a Platy
