At last, after nearly 2 months of cycling I have added my first fish.

My 180 litre is now home to 20 cardinal tetra. They seem to be a bit timid, hiding amongst the plants, at the moment so i am leaving the lights off for tonight & will give them their first feed in the morning.

I know 20 tetra is no where near my stocking level but i wanted to start somewhere & after the hastle I had with my water you will understand why.

Nice start. You may find the cardinals can be a bit fragile to start with, but once they make it through the first few weeks they should be pretty robust, and pretty fish.

Well done Tom. :good: :good: :good:

Keith.

hmm those cardinals may start dropping like flys yet again they might be ok but should be in a 6 month+ tank

sigh  ok, my stock list is going to be cardinals 6+ month tank. corys 6+ month tank. Bn 6+ month tank. Maybe some apisto's 6+ month tank. I had to start somewhere.

My original fish was cardinals, red phantom and glowlight tetra and all are fine. I'm pretty sure it's neons that prefer a mature tank. But then that could be said about the majority of fish.

In all honesty though, you have shown a lot of patience with your fishless cycle and it's time to enjoy your hardwork. Enjoy your cardinals and the more fish to come. I'm sure they'll be fine. Also, i'm sure you are going to stock the tank pretty soon so as not to let the hard earned bacteria die back due to insufficient food.

Well done and enjoy your tank

That is what i read so thats why i went for cardinals. These are Euro bred, not imported from far east or wild caught so fingers crossed.

Cool, just went dowstairs & all the cardys wher at the front of the tank, some legged it when they saw me but the majority stayed. they are settleing in. :)

Great stuff.
Your patience with your cycle shows that you will look after them.

I think it is neons that are more fragile.

I overheard a staff member (at one of the LFS) ask a group of people how old their tank was when they enquired about putting in a load of neons. When they they said it was a few days old i thought he would say wait six months but he said give it a week.
I did mention to one of them that they would not survive and wait six months as the fish looked quite weak anyway.
I dont think they were gonna wait for me to blah on about fishless cycling though !

cardinals are very fragile , they dont travel/acclimatise well. it depends how long the shop has had them in really. if they have only had them a few days it is quite likely you will lose some. but if they have had them for a good couple pf weeks they will be much stronger.

Sorry about the bad quality photo. We have lost our camara so had to take this with phone.

They seem happy enough now they have had their first feed

looks lovely mate, and i'll disagree with everyone on the Cardinal front, they are one of the hardiest fish i have ever owned. They don't need a mature tank, they are not neons. If acclimatised well then you shouldn't have any problems. Looks really good Tom!
