Hellooooo everybody, dad has a slight problem with the fishkeeping hobby idea :/ . They keep dying - not all of them but a few every now and then. It is very anoyying as i do love fish and don't really like them looking furry on a spoon being chucked away. :-(

He has a 3 gallon tank - if you look in the argos catalogue it is the hexagonal one that i think is a coldwater but he's put a heater in his.

He currently has some barbs and neon tetras. These are normally quite hardy if i am not mistaken and he hasn't done much wrong to my knowledge.
We unfortunately only have a nitrIte kit at mo and that is showin fine, nice yellow colour instead of the red. . . Going tomorrow to get other testing kits - i.e. nitrate, ammonia, etc. .

Anyone have an idea why they are dying? he doesnt overfeed and does water changes when he's meant to.

I will answer any questions you throw at me - feel free to criticise the fact he HAD ten fish in his 3 gallon - 5 cherry barbs and 5 neons. HE now has 2 barbs and 4 neons - i feel like he should go to a cell for animal cruelty

Please help! i don't like fish dying - eeeevil!

Thanks for the help, Enthusuast

p.s. me goldfish is doing great in its 30 gal so i'm not doin anythin wrong before you say it's me! lol

well i think you answered the question yourself.... overcrowding?

Was the tank cycled properly? If you don't know what that means then look it up!

As for overcrowding - yes thats possibly. Also Neons aren't really that hardy...

I think he should probably invest in a slightly larger tank, maybe a 10G?

Or get a betta. But even then thats kind of cruel. :(

Good job on the goldfish though!

i think betta would be nice. . he has an undergravel filter and water changes every 2 weeks if not less so its cycling fine me thinks.
I agree with the overcrowding - logic rules all lol
I'll try n persuade him to get a bigger one, might tell him to try coldwater to see how long he can keep them, if he can keep a goldfish i'll let him try something more complicated lol

i'm hoping to get some tankmates for my goldfish soon, any suggestions welcome!

rehome the current fish its for the best
a 3 gallon would be GREAT for a betta
you could get;
1 male betta
2 african dwarf frogs

p.s make sure you get african dwarf frogs NOT african clawed frogs, they are very similar when young

what water is he using for water changes? you can just use tap water by its self.

how long has the tank been running?

but the tank is a bit on the small side for 10 fish of any size.

has the tank got any filtration, or is it just an air stone?

he's using tap water + the dechlorinator thingi to remove the bad stuff - will ask him to take the fish back n get a betta. . . what info do you have on the dwarf frogs? where can i get some from and what environment do they need? Never considered frogs - will research thanks. . . .

Yeah it's just an airstone, there is algi everywhere so i will make him get a filter 2moro lol :D mewha. . .

Tank has been running quite a while, about 2 or 3 months now i think :/

Will see if LFS has betta 2moro. . .

Anyone think of tankmates for MY goldfish in the 30 gal? perhaps white clouds? shoaling mite b nyce. . .

Thanks for advice so far dudes :)

dont know much about frogs, think congo frogs might be cold water.

the tanks need a filter, if you use tap water for the tank you will get alge plus if nitrate is high that will feed .the alge aswell. more water changes will reduce nitrate,
