Hello all, I have a 4 week old 55 Gallon aquarium. I did my best to do everything right and read all the books so I wouldnt kill anything. Well 4 weeks and counting and I have 8 Damsels and 2 Clown fish and they all look extra healthy and active and they are all eating well. Here's my ??, I have noticed as time is going on that the fish (pretty much all of them) seem to swim around all day and are pretty active. But as soon as a fish gets near another they seem to go after each other a little. There is plenty of hiding places ( I have rock and coral and gullies all built along the back for everyone to hide) None of the fish have fin damage or anything, as a matter of fact I've never seen one actually get nipped, just chased for very short spurts. It's not just the Damsels either, the clown fish seem to go at each other a little and obviously certain damsels are worse than others..ie: 3 striped, domino are probably the worse. I've also seen them kinda flutter their rear fins at each other. Almost looks like they could be playing we each other. The 2 Clowns do this as well as the 3 striped and domino to all the fish. Any help or explanation would be great.

Damsels will do that, they dont like others in their territory. Dont worry about it too much, they seem to get better about it with time. If you notice they start to pick on one fish all the time, its a good idea to remove that fish, they might stress it to the point of it dying. I have been told that it is not a good idea to have more than one clown in a tank, but it also depends on what kind of clown you have.
Back to the Damsels, your striped will more than likey try to rule the tank I would sugest getting a larger fish in there to put him in his place. I put a sail fin in mine and it took care of the problem. In fact, I just took alook behind me at my tank and the striped was going after one of my blues, when he saw the sail fin he ran like a little school girl.

Just a note: You can have more than one clownfish (usually two), if you put them in all at once. That way, they'll grow up together and not fight.

(That's how you breed them :D )

That's also how the clownfish determine their gender assuming you added small ones.

That's right. As the clownfish grow up they will become males, and then the dominant one, through social cues, will grow into the female. The female will then breed with any and all other males in the tank.

Landlocked makes her sound like a real slut. When I was diving in Israel, there was a damsel that would do the same thing. Kind of cool, but I am sure glad humans dont do that, what hell that would be!

First of all, have you ever heard of harems?
Harem definition
These were very popular in India. Princes and sultans would have them. They would have thousands of concubines!

Still think that clownfish are the only disgusting ones out there? :sly:

What I was saying was that changing sexes would be hell, I have all ways wanted my own Harem. See if a man takes many wives, the children we still know who mother and father are, (making it "ok" biblicaly speaking) However if a Woman takes many husbands, the children will know who mother is but not the Father. When I said she sounds like a real slut, it was because of the way you stayed:
"The female will then breed with any and all other males in the tank." When I read it, It gave me a big smile, and the thought rolled trough my mind "What a slut!"
I still would be pissed if I started growing breast! Wait a min. On second thought (My very own breast :  ) well maybe that wouldnt be so bad......
