fish a real pet or not....

I hate it when people say fish arent a real pet...i love my fish just as much as every other animal i have maybe even more! well we'll let the people decide that...

Of course they are pets!! They are wonderful animals with interesting and unique personalities. And they don't make a hairy mess of your house, they add to the beauty of it. I think non-fish people just aren't aware of how cool fish can be as pets.

From an online dictionary site....the definition of pet :

1.An animal kept for amusement or companionship.
2.An object of the affections.
3.A person especially loved or indulged; a favorite: the teacher's pet.

Well....my fish fall into all 3 categories

1....my fish never cease to amuse me with their antics
2....I am very fond of my fish
3....I love my fish

SO THERE....fish MUST be real pets!!!

Is a plant a pet?

Fish = plant in my book. Though they are more amusing and my feelings are stronger for it.

For the most part I don't expect fish to interact with me in the same way that I would with some other animals.

It is a thin line.. Of course you can call a horse a bucket and hey, thats your deffinition.
Also there is the aquarium and the fish... certianly a HUge part of keeping your fish pet can be taking care of its environment. The deeper you get into chem. and technology stuff the deeper you get into the hobby. That can be said for keeping any animal... but especially here in the hard to keep organizms.
I vote, not pet. Now let me go ride my bucket... don't even make that dirty!

i voted not a pet. I dont name my fish, as a rule, except my favourite few. I cant pet my fish teh way i dio with a dog, my dog doesnt give me affection the way my dog does, you cant really DO anything with fish except look at them. dont get me wrong, I like fish but I dont love them

I don't see how fish couldn't be considered a real pet. I don't think of fish keeping as a hobby. Its not like a scrap book or wood carving, its a living animal. Animals can't be hobbies, they require too much attention and time. As with any pet, you get what you put into the relationship. If you are nice to your dog and treat it well it will be nice back unless you try to take its food or toys away (basically like having a child ). Its the same with fishkeeping. People that are willing to put a lot of time and effort into making their fish happy usually end up with happy fish to delight them.
