First time tropical fish keeper

Welcome !

First thing to learn before you buy ANY fish is The Nitrogen Cycle, aka Cycling.

That and patience ;)

It will make a difference between heartbreak and a rewarding hobby.

Ask lots of questions here, the folks here are experienced and helpful

I think what every new aquarist should bear in mind is that you just got a garden. It'll take time to get the results you want, but if you jam cut flowers into gravel, they'll wither. Read up on the cycle, look at species profiles for every fish you want, and avoid the Christmas dinner effect (you know, where you fill that plate so many times that you feel like you're going to die - if you overfill the tank with all the beautiful fish you see, they'll really die!).

Moderate patience, moderate stocking and accepting there's a process to bringing an aquarium to life are essential. I've enjoyed this hobby for 55 years, and am very glad I made that first step all those years ago. Welcome to the fun, and to the forum.
Happy holidays!
