i dont exactly know what the substrate is. i asked for very fine gravel and im not sure if its is that or coarse sand. I got it from the lfs and its just like coarse river sand. ill do a close up pic if you like.
to wash it i put some in a bucket, put water it in and mix it around with my hand tell the water gets really dirty and then tip the water out and fill it again. keep doing this till it likes pretty clear. not sure how your 'supposed' to do it but thats what i do.
