First Time Fish Buyer...

I am not saying it is a requirement but it is better for the betta, and iknow someone who does not have one and their betta has lived for 4 yrs.

well, I can see where both of you are coming from.
they actually don't originate from streams, but from rice patties in siam, a very low flow area. to much flow can frustrate bettas, but their are ways of moding them to allow for JUMBO filtration, but littleflow. Now one thing ya'll may want to consider is that in the wild they live in some pretty nasty water, but in the wild they also don't live long. So maybe cleaner water than in nature is better maybe not. But one thing is that they definantly do need some kinda heat, not necessarily in the water, but definantly to keep the air moist and warm, best achieved simply by having a hood and a heater. a lack of this kinda air will hender the labrynth's ability to operate. Now that coupled with a lack of a filter, is very bad. See a betta will either get oxygen from the water or from the air. Either way, the CO2 is gonna go into the water, now this is fine in a tank with proper surface and water movement, which allows gas exchanges, preventing a build up of, for a lack of a better term, "bad gases". Now if you do not have any movement in the water then it follows accordingly that their will be a serious 'bad gas" buildup in the tank. Now with no way of recieving oxygen from the tank, the betta must go to the air. Now if the air is too cold and dry, then as said before, henders the labrynth's ability to do what it does, thus stressing the fish out, and in very serious cases "suffocate" to death.

I also don't think a betta needs a filter because I had one in my 2.5 and he HATED it because he kept freaking out when he went under it, it started sucking him up. So I removed the filter and he seemed much happier and I just added a airstone and he loved it. Because I don't think he was getting enough oxygen without a filter or airpump so I added a air stone and he is still ok to this day.

ok once again i did not say that they require a filter!!!

durkbat how powerful was ur filter, because i had a beta in a 21/2 gal tnank with a 10 gal filter, and he was fine

Well it was one of those whisper filters that came with the tank (its a 2.5g minibow tank) it was on the lowest setting and he still freaked out also its different than other kinds of filters it looks like this http://www.cloudytanks.com/sample/micro1.jpg and he would go under it and get caught.

oh ok. now i can see y he'd get caught. I was talking about like a normal box filter that hangs on the outside of the aquarium.

also good fish to buy is some tetras about 6 will do nicly expesially neon tetras as they are really coulerful. but to keep these u need filter and heater as with most being talked about on previous posts :)

I agree. Obviously bettas seem compilicated to some people, but tetras are easy fish to keep, and are really pretty

hi mulak! i am also from ontario... where abouts do you live? i would recommend big als as the best place to get bettas - they definitely have the most selection; a lot of crowntails and vts... you can but a 2.5g or 3.5 or even a 5g tank there for about $10 plus the glass top which is $5 or so. the 2.5g is like $8.99 + lid. i have 2 of my bettas in tanks this size and they seem to really enjoy it :)

My betta does fine with the filter on one of the lower settings. He seems to enjoy playing in the light current at times. I am just careful he has a place to go to sleep, or rest, or do whatever it is that fish do. I don't use a heater with mine, as I live in Florida, and don't really think that I need a heater. However, if you like to keep your house cool, or you live somewhere cold, a heater isn't a bad idea at all. Betta are pretty tough fish, and I wouldn't be too concerned about things like filters and heaters. They are nice, and your fish will definately appreciate them, but just not needed.
