First Time Fish Buyer...

You could put one betta in any size tank you really wanted. The problem is your tank will look extremely barer with only one fish. I personally wouldn't go bigger than 5 gallons. BTW, NEVER put 2 male bettas in the same tank.

the informations that i have gather into brief point form are:

- 2.5-5 gallon tank
- Hikari Betta bio gold 2.5G at petsmart
- plant (fake) at petsmart
- san fransico bay brand betta food (bloodworm) at petsmart
- a Betta fish at Big Al's

Yep, you'll be set up fine. Just remember the 2.5 gallon I showed you has a hood and a light, and a filter. Also, you can probably buy that stuff at Walmart, and save some $$. I got my 2.5g tank from WalMart, and it has worked fine.

Here is a pic of my betta, Floyd, in my 2.5 gallon aquarium. I have real plants in there, but you can put whatever kind you prefer in.

its looks good... i want to get a mostly red betta and calls it Ares (god of war) :) do i have to buy a heater or the light will automatically warm the water up?

Well, technically, you could get the betta anywhere, because they're great hardy little fish.
Secondly, you might see alot of people here with a betta in a 1/2G, but anything under a ful 1G people consider that torture.

I agree with Ethos. A betta would do best in a 2 1/2 to a 5 gallon tank, or bowl.
I think you will be fine w/o a light, but the fish will need some light each day. I also think you might be able to keep a betta w/o a heater, and a lot of people do. However, what a lot of people don't consider is that the betta is still a tropical fish, and don't you give most other tropical fish a heater? I think that bettas with filters and heaters live the longest. I would maybe consider getting a small heater that you could get @ even Walmart for under $10.
Just think about the fact that its a tropical fish, and what tropical fish need most of all, besides a filter ( a Heater).

Do you have a filter?

Actually, bettas dont need a heater, or a filter.
In fact, they do very well without.
Bettas dont like currents, and filters = currents.

The reason why I want a filter, is because I am a pretty lazy person when it comes doing water changes too often. So for the fishes sake, CAN I use a small filter?

And do I really not need a heater?!

You could have a very small filter on a 2.5G and a 5G, but nothing bigger and smaller.
And unless the room you put the tank in gets colder than 60 degrees ever, no you do not need a heater...

if you want to get something cheaper than the mini-bow, you could also get just a glass, rectangular 2.5 gallon with a glass hood which would probably cost total 10-15 dollars (i'm guessing- i got mine for free and used).
then for a filter, you could get this filter with a small airpump (and maybe valves to control the amount of bubbles produced). you could even skip the filter since a 2.5 gallon is easy to do water changes on.

Bettas originate from streams in Siam. No offese, but I am sure the streams are more powerful than little currents from a filter.

If you don't want to get a filter that's fine, but that is why most bettas kept in aquariums w/ filters, and ones that live out in the wild live longer than bettas in a small bowl w/o a heater or filter.
Also I am sure that the bettas would appreciate warm water more than cold.

*I'm a tab bit frustrated*

No, you do not need a heater, and that is not true, bettas that have heaters DO NOT live longer than ones without.

Bettas themselves get frustrated when they can't keep still, or in the same place. While a betta likes to move around, it does not like be Pushed around or having resitance.

I am sry. I ment that bettas with filters only live longer. What i was tryin to tay is that bettas should have fairly warm water like aroun 72 degreesF, and a lot of the time it is hard to keep a betta bowl w/o a heater at that temperature.

Um, yeah, thats not true either.
I know multipul people who have had bettas live 3+ years w/o having a filter or heater.
Its not a fact.
Bettas just dont need the requirement tropicals do, because they have requirements in different areas.
