First Tank Ever - Updated Often

looks good, but unfortunatley i think you made a mistake on your fish choice

Why's that...let me know soon...Hopefully it isn't a big mistake!!!!

I thought damsels were good for a first fish...you know...inexpensive, hardy, long lasting...inexpensive.....

Let me know what's wrong and how to change it...

Thanks for the feedback so fast.

they are hardy and yeah they are a good beginner fish BUT they are one of the most agressive small fish commonly sold. Once esablished you may struggle to add anythigng to the tank without it gettin a real whooping of those two guys. Because of that you will struggle to get anything back for them if you ever want to move them on

its a same though because they are nice looking. My LFS has a damsel only display tank and its great

A couple of questions:

Does anyone have any info on what the white stuff floating around my tank is?

Also...I've read and heard people talk about a ROWAphos Phosphate Remover...what is it? do I need it? And also is my filter even needed? I have a cheapo hang on filter...which I figured would be good just to move the water around, filter alittle of the garbage that floats around and it would also make some decend water movement (which means I don't need to spend on a powerhead)...thus the reason I kept it.

Please note...1 of my damsels died... The blue one died the next morning. He was in my tank for about 6 hours... When I brought him...he looked sick, so I'm guessing he was just sick to begin with. I went and brought another and had my water checked again... Water is perfect...so lets see what happens.

Please let me know if I'm missing anything. I figured I won't buy a skimmer and just keep up with the water changes.

The white stuff is probably residue from not completely rinsing your sand. Increase surface agitation and let it filter itself out.

Rowaphos/Phosban/GFO is a phosphate remover. It's generally used to combat nuisance algaes which feed on phosphates.

As for the fish, Petco is far from a reputable supplier of livestock in my experience... Any way you can find a local marine specialty shop that surely treats it's livestock better?

Thanks Ski...

I noticed that after I put in my sand...the tank/glass was cloudy...and never cleared up. I'll just scrub the glass and let the filter suck up.

I only went to Petco to get damsels. I plan on going to my LFS, who by the way is a great guy with a very reputable shop, to get my stock.

I was thinking...since my water is perfect; I don't actually need damsels do I?

Also...any thoughts on my filter?
