sounds to me that cycle is a fancy name for bottled amonia.

Could be wrong though

By this i mean if you add cycle to an empty tank (i.e without fish) and you get amonia readings is there another place it could be coming from? seriously that is actually a question

Well I guess it's possible, although it doesn't explain how I got nitrAte readings so fast. From the bottle:

"Powerful biological supplement which rapidly matures new aquariums and filters. [..] One small dose contains enough beneficial bacteria to rapidly consume ammonia and nitrite".

It does say it's one of those live culture solution things, so unless they're lying... Anyway, this noob recommends it.
