First Ever Marine Post

i'm wanting the lightest i can find as it will be better for filtration i assume, now that you have put more doubt into my mind i will be doing further research because i am sure i read it was 2kg per gallon which means for my tank roughly 100kg which is a frightening thought. i am definatly going to be doing plenty of research anyway so i dont go through the same problems i had with the f/w tank, basically i was unaware of the need to cycle and wasn't aware of fish forums either at the time, so the fact i now have such good water conditions was probably more by accident. anyway back to LR I dont intend putting it in all at once, so can i add it piece by piece until i have the amount needed provided i dont add further livestock and therefore overload the bacteria, once i know the answer to this i can start making plans, like i said patience isnt a problem because i intend getting this right, right from the start. so if someone can clarify the amount needed that would be great............ cheers kevin

Hello Kevin

If you look at my little reef you will see I have a Roma 240L tank too which I think is just about the same dimensions as yours, you will see how much rock I have, somewhere in the region of 40kg and I have plenty in my opinion.

First off never pay the retail price, afterall its full of water when they weigh it :/ Its a way to barter if your a cheeky sod like me :). Better still buy it from brakdown/classifieds, normally for decent rock you will pay £6-£7 a kilo and more often than not you will pick up a few critters, not always good one but you deal with that as you go.

The other thing is over time you will pick up coral no doubt which comes on live rock too which all adds to the system.

The only downside of adding rock in stages, let say you go for 4 lots of 10kg then you run the risk of mini cycles in the tank.

The thing is if you want a marine tank and are on limited fund then do what I do and get what you can. The initial setup is the main killer and you have one of the dearest bits of kit already ;)
