Well I was tending to my tank yesterday when suddenly i saw in the floating plants a tiny baby, then another and another until I found 8 little babies. We quickly moved them to a breeding net and ran to the LFS to get baby food.
They are just the cutest things - BUT we have no idea which fish is the Mum?
I think they are Guppies but not sure how you tell when they are so tiny. I have 2 female Guppies - both look exactly the same as before - 1 looks fit to burst and the other one looks pregnant too?

Any way of me being able to tell who the Mum is by appearance?

We are so thrilled - I think we did well to get 8 considering we do not see the birth so no idea how long they had been born when we found them.

My 7 year old son got so emotional - he cried! Ah bless x

Awww, congrats! :D

It's hard to say which female Guppy, if one looks fit to burst and one looks pregnant. Because the one that looks fit to burst could have just had a few, and is going to have more. Or the pregnant one could have had some, and is just still fat with her next batch. It's hard to tell with Guppies. Sometimes you can go by coloring, like if you have a dark female and a light female...but even that doesn't always work. :/

Thanks - I feel like a proper fish keeper now!
Have been looking a some google pics for guppy fry - definitely are guppy so will watch my 2 ladies closely. I am so thrilled we got 8 fry - is that a good number?

A good number? It's fairly low, as Guppies go, but if the female is young or small it would be about normal. :) Or the mother could still be having more fry. Sometimes they take a few days to have them all.

Are you feeding any kind of high-protein food to her, or anything? Because it will be good for her, help her keep up her strength.

I am feeding my fish as normal mix of dried food and algae flakes - babies have specially prepared 3 step baby food (cute!) any recommendations?

Yes. I'd give the mother some Frozen/Freexe-dried/Live foods too. Like Brine Shrimp, Bloodworms, Tubifex Worms..things like that. I'd only recommend maybe 2-3 days a week, and not in a row. Because too much can cause bloating, or constipation, and it also deteriorates your water quality.

It would also be good for the babies when they are a little older. Maybe in a couple weeks, when you move on to tiny flakes for them. :)
