Well I have a planted tank which is why I was suggested firemouths because they only nibble on plants but hardly even that. Would convicts work? I was also thinking Blue Rams if they are possible.. I have no fish in my tank I'm working on a list, which is why I wanted to know what would work with firemouths.
i have community tank with a firemouth in it. i'll tell you everything i've had in it that wasn't a problem.
tiger barbs
redtail shark
sailfin pleco
rosy barbs
blue rams
cuckoo cat
yellow lab
rock krib
keep in mind that these fish were not ALL in together at the same time, but at one time or another all of these fish have been in with the firemouth in various combinations.
firemouths are a more calm cichlid, they do not belong with jacks, oscar and such huge fish, jack dempseys would be O.K..... you could have severums with them, jewels.... convicts too...
First off thanks for the help. So Jack dempseys, severums, jewels, convicts and rams and compatible with firemouths? Will any of them destroy plants? So does that mean convicts, rams and firemouths can be in the same tank?
They don't destroy plants, you should be fine there. They may occasionally eat some of the plant. Those can be in the same tank, but you must be sure not to overstock the tank. Cichlids are territorial fish, so they will each stake a claim to part of the tank. Just keep that in mind when adding fish.
Are you kidding they dont destroy plants? they will rip plants into peices!!!! cichlids + Live plants= massacre on the plants, they cant even stand my fake plants!
I guess that means there aren't any larger fish that you can put in a planted tank. I think I've decided against them anyway just not worth it at the moment.
I sure wouldn't put a convict in the same tank as rams. if the con, especially a male, decided he didn't like the ram he would make very short work of it. convicts are much more aggressive and territorial than firemouths. IMO, even firemouths with rams would be a risk but would given the tank size you'd have a better chance of success with the fm's than cons. just my opinion.
I have a firemouth in a 25 gal with neons, rummy noses, black tetras, zebra danios, cherry barb, gouramis, flying fox, etc. He's fine and so are his tankmates.
I dont think a jack dempsey will do well with a firemouth. They are way to territorial and will claim the entire tank for itself. my stock list for a 55g with 2 Fire mouths would be like this:
2 Fire mouths
2 sevrums
Pleco..
