Note: I am a newbie, so forgive me for any crazy questions!

Basically, i'm planning on getting a 190 litre tank or something close to that size and was hoping it would be big enough to accomodate firemouth cichlids? If this size tank is big enough, how many cichlids could i have? :)

Many thanks,

Bobby!

Are you wanting more than one firemouth? If you get a pair then you wouldn't probably be able have any others incase they spawn. They can be a bit aggressive when parenting. If you are set on a firemouth then you could possibly house him with a few others such as an angel or a female convict or honduran red point. A fair few to choose from. Also look at Sajicas, jade eyeds, rainbows and keyholes.

Well i'm not 100% set on firemouths but was just reseaching to be honest :) Although i do like the idea of having a bit more of a mix!
Im now wanting to know, is there nothing i can do to stop breeding? like prevent getting females?

If you have more than one male they will fight and the less dominant one will probably just spend most of his time in a corner of the tank. If you are looking for something smaller then look at the red breasted acara, really pretty. You could get a small group of geophagus red humps or something like that? If you want smaller cichlids then maybe Bolivian rams or apistos. Flag acara's are nice too.

Okay, i don't want any unhappy fish so i know now! To be honest with you i'm looking to get some bigger sized cichlids but im guessing with a tank around 200 litres i wouldn't be able to get anything to big!

I've looked at all the fish you've said and they all look really pretty! I guess it's just a case of finding an array of cichlids that won't fight, or be put in a tank to small for their growth!

Tricky stuff for a noobie! :(

Thanks alot for your help though! :)

No problem mate. They're probably the biggest cichlids you are going to be able to house in that size tank. Anything bigger than 6" and I thinly you would need to be looking at least 4ft. Height not so important unless you consider angels.

It really does depend on what size you get. If you stretch to a 55gallon then you could get something a bit bigger but it depends on what personality you want. You could keep 2 Sevs in a 55gallon but you'd have to be ready to rehome one if things get out of hand.

So many species you could have, here's a short list of cichlids for a 200L:
Festive Cichlids,
Blue Acaras,
Angelfish (if the tank is tall),
Keyhole Cichlids,
Red-breast Cichlids,
Bolivan Rams,
Rams *more delicate*,
Apistogramma sp. *more delicate*.
(Obviously not all of them together)

A lot more species of course but I think that's enough to choose from for now

I will just say that a 55 gallon is not appropriate for two severum unless maybe they were the heros sp. rotkeil. Most severum grow too large to be comfortable in a 55.
