I bought my first Firebelly Newt around Feb. and had him in a 10 gallon tank with the rest of my fish. I noticed that he kept crawling up onto my powerhead ( I have an undergravel filter). I kept pulling him off there and I got sick of it so I went out and bought him a 10 gallon of his own. Then I went and bought him one of those Plastic Floating Islands. He wouldn't get out of the water much so I bought him a friend...another Newt. Well I had the 2nd Newt for about 3 weeks when he just all of the sudden disappeared. I was worried. TUrned their whole tank upside down practically. He was nowhere to be found. Well about 2 days later I found him dried up in my living room. I couldn't figure out how he got loose.

Well about a month ago I bought 3 more Newts. With a day one disappeared again. I still haven't found him. About 2 weeks later I bought 3 more Newts. None of them crawled out this time but one of them had what looked like a scar by his mouth. I didn't think anything of it. A few days later...he was dead. Then a few days after that I caught one of the Newts climbing up the corner of the tank. He had sort of braced himself by placing his little legs on eachside of the corner. Well anyway last week I found another Newt dead. I don't know why. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Poor little guys.

I've kept fire bellied newts a few times and initially I had the same problems as you (fining them all crisp and meely on the living room rug!) In the end I got them their own tank, I filled it to around a 3rd way and created a small land area for them. I used a small box filter and a heater and provided .... and this is the most importent bit! ... A TIGHT FITTING LID!!!

I had them for a coupe of years 'til I moved away to university and had relativly few problems with them.

Hope this helps

James
