Ok. have a problem.. I bought a betta a week ago or so.. next day it died. it had finrot?.. so i got my money back whatever.. but the problem is. i used the net to take it out and I also have a 40 gallon cycling with danios in it..

Well, i forgot to clean the net and put it in the 40 gallon. and my danios got the fungus. so i moved them to a quarantine tank.. and now i'm not sure what to do.. ppl say don't medicate a tank if it's cycling..

so i have a 40 gallon almost done cycling with no fish in it..
should i medicate the tank? should i get new danios?

ammonia .25 nitrite 3.. nitrate 20.
everything si dropping from the nitrite spike about 4-5 days ago.

i figure theres about 3-5 days left in the cycle and now there's no fish at all in it..

Someone said get Melafix.. which is fine for the QT tank, but what about the 40 gallon?

hmmm that's a tough situation...could you just switch to a bit of fishless cycling to finsih off the job? add in tiny bits of ammonia so your bacteria won't die off and just let the thing finish cycling without the danios.

As for the tank, i'd suggest you treat it once the cycling is done (but i'm 100% sure on this as i've never had it happen to me before).

oh and btw, i'm not sure finrot is really contagious. Becuase i have 4 bettas divided in a 10G tank, one of them caught a bad case of finrot (as in really bad), but NONE of the other bettas (even the one right next to him) were affected. They all share the same water since the dividers have holes.

okay i'm just rambling, anyways best of luck :) sorry i couldnt' give you can concrete expierence on this one :)

Also on a side note.. How long does finrot. or a fungus last in an empty tank?

I am currently cycling a 30g tank with 6 red phantom tetra. They have fin-rot (thanks to the LFS!!) which I am currently treating with an interpet medication. It states that it doesn't effect the biological filter and the LFS stated that it will be ok to use in a cycling tank without affecting the cycle.

So far the amonia has dropped to zero (after 5 days) and the nitrite is now beginning to spike so thing must still be working.
