just finished setting up my new 12g, this is gonna house 5 or 6 male guppies, a couple cherry shrimp, and either a pomacea bridgesii or an Oto.

currently there is a gambusia i caught in the lake behind my house as my starter fish, if he doesnt attack my guppies i will keep him, otherwise he goes back to the lake.

i got some micro swords, some java fern, some of the frayed leaf java fern, and an annubia that is about to flower, along with these piece of drift wood.

now that is set up im thinking the drift wood is too tall, and im thinking about cutting 2 to 3 inches on the bottom to lower it a bit, what do you guys think?

hi
have you tried putting the piece of wood in another position??

laing down maybe??

maybe you can make it look like a arch

very nice piece of wood do

good luck :good:

i bought this piec of wood, to make it look like a tree, , reason why i dont want to lay it down, but wouldnt mind taking a few inches of "trunk" so i can use the upper braches to attach some plants to it

I can only see one problem with doing that.

It may block too much light from anything underneath.

But if it works then that wood will look ace with some moss or something to make a tree.

they are low light plants so having a bit of shade shouldn't be a problem. The Anubias would thank you for a bit of shade.

also, you could do with a few foreground plants at the front. Nice bit of wood!

yeah i got all low light plants for that reason, you cant see it in the pics but there are some micro swords in the foreground, im hoping they will spread out a lil.

im still thinking i may cut about 3 inches from the trunk of the "tree" to lower the branches so i can attach something green to it.

what are you doing in the way of c02 and ferts?

have you thought about using some Easycarbo or Flourish Excel, it'll help with the growth and also help keep the algea at bay.

which one would you think is better?

id like to eventually have shrimp and maybe a snail so im trying to stay away from too many chems in the water

They both contain the same chemical and do the same job. I have found the flourish cheaper in the long run. I have snails and shrimps in my tank and there are no probs.

To echo Ianho's sentiment, I've got snails and shrimp in a moderately heavily planted tank (just 10 gallon), and I started doseing with Flourish Excel after a massive BGA breakout. No problems with any tank livestock. :)

whent and got the flourish excel today will start dosing tomorrow

Need faster growing plants to combat algae (utilise the ammonia in the tank that is two to three orders of magnitude lower than what can be picked up on a test kit). You could substitute this though with two water changes per week. Or zeolite.
