Hi All,

Bought 2 x Oranda goldfish about 2 hours ago. They have been gradually acclimated to my water and are now swimming freely in my large tank.

As this is my first time having fancy goldfish, I asked for advice on food at my lfs.

They talked me into buying "tetra goldfish gold japan premium food for fancy goldfish" cost £6.40

they are mini sticks with a reddish tint.

they told me to put about 8 sticks ( more like mini pellets) in, 1 time a day for the next few days. roughly 4 per fish.

1) is feeding them 1x a day ok?? Is this enough for them??

2) so many places on the internet say feed peas once a week - if so how many, how often and does it replace a days feed??

3) any other help/info much appreciated.

Thank you all for your help and support over the last few weeks and sorry to yet be asking more info as I just dont trust lfs 100%.

1. I would do two pellets each, plus a spare one. Feeding twice, or even three times a day is best for goldies; they're grazers in nature, so you want to feed little and often.

2. One pea each, plus a spare (the 'spare' is so that even if your most dominant fish tries to steal food, your least dominant always has an 'extra' it can go for). Don't feed anything else that day, and don't feed them the day after. That makes sure their gut doesn't get 'clogged up'.

3. If the food floats, soak it in a cup of tank water until it sinks. Fancy goldfish, when eating from the surface, often swallow extra air and with their weird shaped swim bladder, it can cause buoyancy issues.

so grateful for you help.

so just to double check im doing it correctly for 2 fish

Monday - 5 pellets in the morning  5 pellets in the evening
Tuesday - 5 pellets in the morning  5 pellets in the evening
Wednesday - 5 pellets in the morning  5 pellets in the evening
Thursday - 5 pellets in the morning  5 pellets in the evening
Friday - 5 pellets in the morning  5 pellets in the evening

Saturday - place 3 peas in tank ( finely cut into smallish pieces) - no pellets fed

Sunday - No feeding at all

Does that sound ok to you?/

Sounds good to me although, of course, without knowing exactly how big your fish are and how fast they're growing, it's hard to be sure on how much food you're going to need to be giving them.

If those five pellets are gone in 30 seconds, then you might need to add a few more. On the other hand, if the fish take ages eating them, or have any buoyancy problems after eating, you'll have to cut a couple out.

The Tetra Gold Japan is a great food :) completely fast sinking to deter goldfish from going to the surface!

Settup and routine seems lovely :)
