so i got my tank sorted finally 
very happy with it now, got my new light tubes/bulbs, replaced the dirt substrate and capped it with sand and i fine layer of reddy brown pea shaped gravel. i got rid of my old internal filter and replaced it with a hang on back filter made my aqua clear i think it is (i put all my old filter media in there before anybody starts worrying) caused myself an injury (nearly tore my thumb nail completely out, eughgerdhfvwe) whilst trying to modify my tank so that the filter could actually fit on lol! it was worth it though and i have also planted it out now too
here is a list of the plants i've used...
hygrophillia difformis
cryptocoryne becketii
cabomba australis
ludwigia mullertii
aponogeton crispus
anubias nana
and finally sagittaria natans
very pleased with how it looks just waiting on the delivery of my api master test kit, hopefully all my water parameters are okay but i would like to check just to be on the safe side before i go restocking the tank
i'll post pics up shortly when i can be bothered to find my camera
