Sorry for the over-abundance of shots lately. My two cichlids are always hiding and they sense even the smallest amount of movement from my camera. I'm pleased I finally got a good shot of one.

A question - the tank at the LFS labeled the cichlid as an electric yellow. Is that the case? The pictures of electric yellows on online databases all have a blue/black streak on their fins. Mine don't. Is this an electric yellow or another variety?

Hi Limpyfins,

The fish doesn't look like a electric yellow to me, they normally have a black edge to their fins.

The fish could possibly be a red zebra (maylandia esterea).

Hope this helps

nice looking fish though

Hi Limpy,

Nice Cichlid you got there. However this is not an electric yellow. I have 2 of them in my tank and they are really YELLOW with a black edge on their fin as Gazat said... I will try to get a pic of them for you so you can compare... :p :D

I'm not great at fish ID, but that yellow spot on the adipose (? ) fin (the lower fin nearest the tail) does remind me of another fish, as does the shape of the head and fins. The fish I was looking at was Psuedotropheus aurora which is actually a blue fish. Could your fish be another type of Pseudotropheus, maybe a yellow morph?

thanks for the help, everyone. i knew it wasn't an electric yellow (that's why i mentioned the dark stripe on the fins), but after looking more i think it is perhaps a Kenyi -- Maylandia Lombardoi otherwise known as Pseudotrophius Lombardoi. though you can't tell from the picture, it's actually got some faint darker stripes in its body. here is a picture of that breed:
