got it figured out. final task: acquiring the fish! here's my list. i left the list i have been working on at home, so i'm taking a shot a remembering all the names, but it's only 5, maybe 6 species. as far as the needed flash of blue, i am using a malawi that i understand works with the tangs i chose.

altolamprologus calvus (black)

chalinochromis brichardi

copadichromis azureus

eretmodus cyanostictus

neolamprologus cylindricus

i understand these may hybridize with n. leleupi, which was why i also chose c. brichardi, perhaps as a substitute. however, i really want those vertical black stripes so i may take the risk. comments?

i have a couple of local possibilities but may have to order most (from www.bluechipaquatics.com if i do). getting the 55 gallon tank set and stand today, and letting it cycle for a good while. found a DEAL on an eheim 2213 canister, to which i may add an included power filter.

How big is your tank? Sorry nm

Calvus is a good choice.
Brichardi are very aggressive when spawning so I suggest just one.
Leleupi are very aggressive towards each other when spawning might be ok might not.
Eretmodus cyanostictus is very aggressive towards each other but very peaceful towards other fish. I believe they're hard to spawn and not much else is really known about them.
copadichromis azureus I don't know much about them.
neolamprologus cylindricus similar to Leleupi.

I would get a trio of calvus
1 Brichardi
1 Leleupi
2 Eretmodus
4-5 Azureus?
1-2 Cylindricus
Maybe a school of cyps

55 gallons. i don't want more than two of each fish, i think. and i may not even get n. cylindricus.

Ok yeah sorry didn't notice it already said tank size. Brchardi will take over your tank I know someone who had a pair in a 125 and they took over a 1/3 of it.

your suggested combo looks good to me. this is my first real attempt at getting a good cichlid setup, and i am glad to know i am not off-base about the combination. calvus are my fav in the list, so it works.

thanks!

While long term a pair of Calvus is what you're going for, they do best in groups while young and take an extraordinarily long time to grow - having a 3 or 4 of these guys is really a good idea. Going with singles for the rest is the best plan because of how many species there is going to be - there's certainly no room for spawning territories if those Copadichromis are going to be involved - a tank full of breeding Tangs is an unfortunate place for those guys.

Good luck, sounds nice

i'm not married to the idea of the azureus or the leleupi, i am just interested in having several solid-y blues and several solid golds/yellows. any other ideas?
