i have poorly cichlid (Pseudotropheus saulosie) he is one of 7 fish in a big fish tank sorry i am not sure exactly how big
i think he has fin rot as his fins are badly torn but he has no white fuzzy stuff on him
and have been treating with some stuff from the fishshop but i am worried i am just prolonging the pain for it is quite far gone but i think well it won't make it tonight and its still alive in the morning but he has trouble swimming i have put in in a tank by its self and treating both tanks and does anyone have any ideas or help cheers

I would bet a million bucks on the fact that your fish does not have fin rot!

And I would bet another milion that his fins are torn because of aggression problems.

Cichlids are very agressive and your little guy is probably getting picked on!

Make sure you have plenty of hiding places. Keep him in his own tankand treat with melafix, once his fins have grown back, rearrange your tank and as long as their are plenty of hiding places, I would put himback in and just watch him and see if anyone is picking on him!

Good Luck! :D

i think you may be right in a way as it happened to another fish but what can i do there are loads of hiding places for them and less fish now that the other one died which was the biggest and most agressive i have 6 left and now my cat fish has a tear in its dorsal fin and he is lovely my fav in fact so any ideas on what i can do i am treating the tact as the fish have a few tears each and i don't want it to get worse but i have had the fish over a year

hmmm...what size tank do you have?

I have a 30 gallon and have 5 fish in there. The aggression went down alot when I added 2 more fish. Unfortunately its just in the cichlids nature to be aggressive. I guess as long as you have ton of hiding places, there may not be anything else you can do.

Hi kerry2424

I'll help you if I can, but I'll need some more information to do it.

First, tell me about your tank. What size is it and what kinds of fish do you have in there?

How long has it been set up? It's cycled, isn't it? If you can give some test readings on the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, that would be helpful too. What is the temperature of the water?

This is like going to the doctor, in a way. He cannot make a diagnosis either, if you call him on the phone and don't give him any information. ;)

well i have african cichlids i have a big tank not sure exatcly as it was given to me but its at least 3-4 foot in length my friend used to keep oscars in it but he got a bigger tank its been up and running for about a year no problems up until now but i did add a cat fish about three months ago temp is about 75-80 and i get it tested at my local pet store every few weeks

add i think at least 6 more africans, you could have up to 20, if it is a standard 75 gallon, this should reduce the agression
