I have been told not to put angel fish with other fin nipping fish, and i was wondering, what fish are classed as fin nipping?
I was also told angel fish eat small fish, is this right? How small are these 'small fish'?

Ive had Angels in with Guppies and Neons with no problems - Guppy fry stand no chance whatsoever - angels will eat fry and are very good at it as well

I used to have a community tank with 2 angel fish in, they did pick on a few fish if they got in there way but I have heard that they will eat neon tetras. I had about 10 neons and i don't think any got eaten...

as your tank is new i wouldnt think about angels for a few months. to cycle the tank you would be best going for a few danios. fin nippers are barbs and some types of tetras such as black widows.
angelfish also need around ten gallons each.

i wasnt planning on getting angel fish anytime soon, i am just thinking about the sorts of fish i would like to end up with.

is a 63 litre too small to consider angel fish? At my lfs they have 3 sizes, will the small ones be ok in my tank?

small angels grow into large angels, so if you cant care for them when they reach adulthood then i dont see the point. 16 gallons is really only enough room for one full grown angel and they really shouldnt be kept on their own. :)

ok thannks for the help, thats a shame because i really love angel fish.

mine has had 2 tank mates and killed each one within 2 days (in a 40G)

wouldn't agree that you cant keep them alone but you really need a taller tank. i had mine in a 12G for a while and she wasn't happy at all.

Two of the most notorious fin nippers in the community aquarium would have to be Tiger Barbs and Serpae Tetra. Although this can be aleviated to a certain extent by having a large shoal. But most people buy them in quantities of 4-6 for their living room tanks & in this situation they seem to turn on their long finned tankmates, especially male guppies.

It's been mentioned lots before but it remains an Angel issue, they live on a spectrum between Serial Killer & Peaceful with just about everyone. In my family of fishy friends, we have both  An angel fish can be a harmonious member of the tank if placed in the right community, a stable community, and if they grow up with others they are unlikely to eat them in my experience.

I would not do an angel in that small of a tank. It's just not tall enough to allow the angel adequate room to grow.

Serpaes are definite fin nippers. My angel is the king of the tank, but his tailfin is a bit nipped up. If he were any less dominant in the tank, I would have had to remove him or the serpaes.

Angels/neons. Experiences vary widely. Some say that if you get a juvy angel and have it grow up with the neons and then make sure to keep the angel from getting too hungry (not a problem in most home aquariums) then the angel will not have need to much on neons. I've had my angel in with neons for about 6mos and haven't lost any of the neons to the angel.

But that's all a moot point b/c your tank isn't adequately large enough for an angel ;)

Barbs are fin nippers, that should be in thier description, most barbs that is, not ALL. A lot of fish could be described as fin nippers if not kept properly, Zebra/leopard danios could be classed as fin nippers if kept in small schools, <6.

Puffers are the ultimate fin nipper. Collumesus Asselus (south american puffer, Brazillian puffer) is a prime example. My preffered lfs has a lable on them that says 'not to be kept with long fined fish' this is BS, they are species only fish, to be kept on thier own. When small they will keep to theselves, but as they grow they will take on fish four times thier size.

Angels need an 18" high tank, at least. A 48" L x 18" H x 12" W would be preferred, 36" L is doable, but not ideal.
