Fin Damage! What Do I Do?!

beta looks like a crown tail, so having the split in the fins are alright, but this one seems to be having issues... just make sure that the water is clean, and he is fed nicely and he'll grow it back.. don't over feed though! lol

i would say you can upgrade him to a 10 gallon, add a filter.. then when everything cycles you can add in some other community fish... he'll love it and he'll become way more showy and energetic.

There is no guarantee that this particular betta will like other fish in the same tank.  He could end up being very aggressive or very easily stressed so I caution adding any tankmates unless you watch them very carefully.  I do like the 10 gallon idea though.

Salt is not really good for FW fish.  It does make their kidneys have to work a whole lot harder.  Now this isn't saying it will "hurt" the fish especially short term and there are many that use salt as a preventative in FW tanks.   The main thing salt does is irritate the fish's skin which makes it produce more of the slime coat.  I do not however recommend the use of salt in a FW tank unless it is specifically needed.  Example would be ICH.  Warm, very clean water is all that is needed to heal most fin damage, even that cause by fin rot.  If the fin rot were to get worse, I would suggest an antibiotic because at that point there is an infection going on.  If your tank has a cycled filter, you do not need to remove him water change.  If you do not have a filter, then removing him while you do a 100% water change is what you should be doing.  You can easily teach your betta to come to the surface and then suck him up in a cup by allowing the surrounding water to carry him into the cup.  Pretty soon he will get used to this and not try to get away.
There are a lot of benefits to a small amount of salt in a freshwater aquarium, depending on the fish... in fact, this is the only way some goldfish breeders will keep their fish. Indeed, it promotes slime coat and protects against infection, keeps their immune systems strong and healthy and promotes healing.

Yes, I have had great success with the Indian almond leaves also......

were can I find indian almond leaves?

A 10 gallon tank is on my amazon wish list, we'll see when I can get it.

Jack is a crown tail. When we got him, we also got an ADF as a tank mate. Jack ate all of the ADF's food and nipped at him a few times in the 4 days that I kept them together. I am not sure he would make a good tank mate :p

I do also....and just for information....walmart has a 10 gallon tank set up, comes with lighted hood, filter....for $30. Pretty good deal if you need a 10 gal.

I find that for a beta, have fast moving fish.. (which can be in a 10 gallon) slow moving fish can be picked on by the beta.

i differ with you, bettas are slow moving and should be housed with slower fish because faster fish can eat all of the bettas food,

Really? I looked at Walmart (cause I found a 5 gal way cheaper there than amazon) an I couldn't find a 10 gal that cheap). Best I found was one on amazon for $38. I think a heater is a higher priority though right now and the hydro 25 watt I want (I have it in my other tank and like it) is about $25. This all doesn't sound like much but my last day of work was yesterday and with 3 kids and a single income plus my school expenses it is.

The filter that came with the 5 gal - the mighty mini, from Walmart is really crummy (just FYI) but I will definitely look for the 10 gal again (every penny counts!).Thanks for letting me know about it :)

Oh and jack is looking more himself as of last night - back to flairing at everything and anything that gets near his tank.

So glad jack is doing better!  Yes, I got my 10 gallon tanks at Walmart. I also got all my 5 gallons at Walmart, they were $27 for the setup (filter and LED lighted hood). The only problem with the 10 gal hoods, is you have to replace the bulbs it comes with if you have live plants. Buying heaters can add up, I know....I search for bargains on tanks etc, all the time, and Walmart did have the best price on the tank setups (5 and 10 gal) I wish they sold bigger tanks too!  (yes, every penny counts for sure!!!)

just as an FYI, I found a 10 gal at Walmart for $13.97 - I didn't find this online, but I happened to be in the store and saw it.
