Hi there,

I have read that a good water turn over is between 5 and 7 times the tank volume does that change depending on filter brands for eg Eheim vs other brands?

Regards Darren

The biggest factor of how much turnover you need is the stocking. True, some filter media contains a more bacteria friendly environment, but how much waste is created is the factor how much filtration you need. For some messy preds, you will need heavy filtration, maybe upwards of 10x turnover if they get fed alot in one feeding and leave some to sit and it starts to rot. For a normal community that is understocked, as low as 3x to 4x turnover will be adequate.

So base your rate of turnover on your stocking :good:

nope it doesn't change for different filter brands. Just get a filter that does the tank at least 5 times per hour, preferably more. Generally bigger is better if you can afford it.

But then Planted Tanks throw a kink into it. There is a fair amount of talk among the planted tank people about dropping that rate down to x4 rather than x5, especially with certain plants which prefer a more calm environment.

^^ Again depends on the tank, some planted tanks actually go for higher then normal flow rates, to keep the co2 certulating quikly.

Personly my 20g is over stocked so i have around 10x.

They type of filtration & turnover rate takes many variables into account, just like anything else in aquatics. A filter more oriented towards bio filtration will have a lower turnover rate, one for mechanical filtration will have a higher turnover rate. For your average stocked community aquarium the 5-7x per hour is a good rate.

From your link it looks like you will be dealing with some good size tanks, and it sounds like a fun project. For tanks that size consider a sump filtration system if noise is not too much of an issue. If you want tanks that run nearly silent look into some of the larger Eheim canisters for tanks that size.

Thanks tolak

noise is no big deal they will all back onto a fish room and a great idea but I was leaning to a sump, I have a sump on my tank and love it.
