I have had several aquariums over the years and have always used an undergravel filter - first with airlift, then with powerheads. Last year my 55 gal split a seam and dumped on my new carpeting :-( I finally got the courage to start over.

I would like to use some of the new filter technology out there. I don't even know where to start with all the gadgets I've seen. I have an enclosed wood stand and would like to keep it close to the wall if possible. I think I would also prefer to keep as much hardware out of sight as possible. Quiet is a must - there's nothing more irritating than a silent, peaceful tank of fish with a buzzing pump down below. :S

I also want to do live plants again. I had some success with the undergravel filter, but I know circulation around the roots is not good. What are some good recommendations for gravel? I prefer darker, natural colors.

A magnum canister filter would be a good all around choice!!

They are quiet and the 350 model would be adequate for your tank. It would also allow you to keep it fairly close to the wall as it uses hoses for the input and output.

Any of the HOB (hang on back) type of filters would take a minimum of 4-5" of width.

I ordered a magnum just the other night, I think Great Lakes was saying that if possible I should mount the canister at tank level, because it will put less strain on the system.

Do I remember this right?

If so I believe I have the room to do that if it is really that beneficial.
(not too sure cause im at school, tank will be set up at home)

Other wise I was planning on just putting it under my tank in the cabinet.

thanks :p
