Hi all! I am relatively new to this hobby/obsession and I'm already totally addicted! After 6 months of fish-keeping, I am more than ready to progress. I have just invested in a Fluval Roma 125 tank, which I intend to use as a Tropical Freshwater Community step-up. I currently have a 6-month old 40 litre starter tank, which is well established and inhabited by mollies, corys, amano shrimp and a clown pleco. The new tank came with a Fluval U3 internal filter and I am wondering whether this is fit for purpose or not. Should I start looking at external filters, and if so, what are the best options for a 125 litre tank? Any advice gratefully received!

Even though the U3 filter is provided with the Roma 125 as standard I would recommend upgrading to either a stronger internal or even better if your funds allow going with an external would be the better option. Especially if you want to stock your tank to its limit.

There are many different brands of filters out there so you will need to decide on how much money you are willing to spend, for your tank I would aim for a filter rated at least 1000lph, popular brands are Fluval, Tetra Tec, JBL, All Pond Solutions amongst others. You could sell the U3 to raise some funds to put towards a stronger filter, and also you can use the mature media from your existing filter to help seed your new filter.

If you do some searching online and come back to us with a few options we can then help guide you further.

My 125 came as standard with the U3 and it's more than capable of looking after the tank and its contents, however It was (I thought) a little intrusive in the look of my tank and also the options of filter media was very limited to manufacturer own products which are needlessly overpriced so I opted to get a 206 External.

Thanks both. Much appreciated!! I've had a look on aqadvisor and it recommends two Fluval 306 external filters. That seems like a lot of filtration for the tank size!

You should be fine with just one external filter as long as it has a flow rate of around 1000lph
