sponge / canister / sump...take your pick...
sponge you get no flow and lots of aeration...easy maintenance
canister...get whatever flow/aeration you want...medium maintenance...(gotta setup a schedule maintenance to prevent damaged parts due to accumulation of debris and gunk on the blades/bucket)
sump...pretty much like the canister...whatever flow/aeration you want..maintenance is a bit easier than a canister as it's an open box...custom filtration needs...
this is where you have to decide for yourself what do you want in the end...
do you want lots of flow? cross sponge filtration out...and look at canister/sumps
do you want fry? sponge filters are the best...
do you want flow and fry??!? you'd need a drilled tank and a canister pulling water through a sponge around a pvc pipe or an internal sump with an underwater sock intake so they can get in and out...
as for hob filters..I wouldn't use them myself...so I don't even bother with them...
