Hi.

I’m setting up a 90 litre tropical tank. I’m looking for recommendations on filters.

Thanks

sponge / canister / sump...take your pick...
sponge you get no flow and lots of aeration...easy maintenance
canister...get whatever flow/aeration you want...medium maintenance...(gotta setup a schedule maintenance to prevent damaged parts due to accumulation of debris and gunk on the blades/bucket)
sump...pretty much like the canister...whatever flow/aeration you want..maintenance is a bit easier than a canister as it's an open box...custom filtration needs...
this is where you have to decide for yourself what do you want in the end...
do you want lots of flow? cross sponge filtration out...and look at canister/sumps
do you want fry? sponge filters are the best...
do you want flow and fry??!? you'd need a drilled tank and a canister pulling water through a sponge around a pvc pipe or an internal sump with an underwater sock intake so they can get in and out...
as for hob filters..I wouldn't use them myself...so I don't even bother with them...

Thanks for this. I’m really just looking for something that gives good water clarity.

if you want things being fine filtered then sump/canister
easiest for beginners would be canister...pretty much plug and play...
I would still drill the tank for both methods (sump/canister)
and if going the canister route...an easy trick you can do for fry/shrimp not to be sucked into the canister
on the canister intake put a pvc pipe connected to the bulkhead and drill as many holes as you can on that pipe and just put a sponge from a sponge filter on it...
that will prevent fry from getting sucked in.
with a sump and fry..it HAS to be an internal one and not an under the table one
the intake would have to be under the water line (lots of holes) and not an overflow one with a glass/plastic tray with a sock...this way fish can swim in and out of the intake partition
and the sock will block them from going any further
good luck
