Filters

[Ima Newbie]

Hi all. Im a little confused on the whole filter system. I'm not sure what kind I have. It was given to me. It hangs on the side of the tank. It has a tube that goes down into the tank which pulls the water up and then through the filter and back out into the tank. What is this type called? And the filter pads that are in it....I am guessing that they are filled with charcoal? They are green pads with little black rocks inside them with a plastic back. I have a 55 gal tank and I dont think that it does that great of a job for as big as my tank is. What would you suggest that I get for this size of tank?

based on your description, Im guessing that it is a Hang on Back(filter)..I use the same filter myself..2 Aquaclear 150 for my 30 gallon and it has been great. I dont know about the other brands of HOB filters, but for your 55 gallon, you should at least have Aquaclear 300 or 500.

I would go for an Eheim 2026 Pro II.Aquarium Superstore

Or a fluval 404 preferably the Eheim tho.
