I am planning a big tank. somewhere in the 100g region. Can anyone make a recommendation on a good QUIET filter. my hubby already complains about how loud the filter in our 30g is and most of the larger filters ive seen have two biowheels and ive heard people say they have four running on their tanks. Will more biowheels add to the noise? i would think so. would a hood help? I am trying to keep the cost down and the hoods i found were pretty expensive although i am getting a great deal on the tank.

If you want quiet, I would recommend a canister filter. I have Fluvals, and they're totally silent... really, they are!! There are lots of good brands of canisters out there, but I have 3 Fluvals and really like them.

Kitty,

I have a 75 gallon tank and I have two Emperor Biowheels on it. They definitely make noise, however, I think it is a pleasurable noise. I do not notice a hum or a mechanical noise of any kind, just the flow of water into water which is very peaceful to me. This sound may drown out any mechanical noise.

Good luck with your tank!

Personally having run wet/dry, HOB/power, and cannister filters I'd say the cannisters are very quiet. Personally I have a fluval 304 and on thursday I'll find out how quiet a cascade 700 is so I'll let you know then

njnauticalnut, i also dont mind the waterfall sound but its my hubby it drives crazy and since he is the financial backbone to my fish addiction i want to try to make him as happy as possible. As far as the cannisters go, i looked into them alittle and it says you can have between 4 and 8 filter media in at the same time. in your experiences what is the best combo. also i only saw 3 sizes up to 40, 70 or 100. i was thinking about a 110 g tank. is this the kind of filter that over kill is better or would a 100 do. i was thinking maybe 2 that are rated for up to 70 g. opinions?

I would probably go with 2 filters rated for 70 gallons. I look at the gallons per hour rating of the filter, and try to shoot for 6 - 10 times the volume of the tank.

In the lower compartment I have floss or a bonded filter pad to handle the mechanical filtration. If you use carbon, you'd want to put that in the middle (I have phos-x in the middle to help reduce the phosphate level). In the top you'd put your biological filtration media, like bio-max.
