Just reading throught the thread... I am very new at keeping fish but I have an aqua clear 500 for a 55 gal. It works really well and its quiet. I don't know much about the other filters though to be honest. As far as price in LFSs the ACs are expensive but online like mentioned above they are more than 50% cheaper. I ordered mine from petsmart.com.

i work for walmart and we don't sell the regent at my store anymore we sell the aquatech and the whisper.. and i alway suggest the aquatech over the whisper.. they are about the same price but i like the aquatech better. no bio wheel but for just the filter it works well..and it is quite...
