Ive a juwel 300 running the standard juwel 400 in tank filter along with a tetratec 1200 external filter, can this be over kill for the tank?

i have around 13 malawi cichlids and 2 large plecs in the tank at the moment.

As long as your fish are not hiding in corners or having trouble swimming, there is no problem with the filter flows that you have.
